Sonim Announces OMA POC Complient Client
Tuesday, February 15, 2005
SAN MATEO, CA - Sonim Technologies, the leader in enabling today’s wireless data networks to deliver high-margin VoIP applications including Push-to-Talk, today reiterated its commitment to Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) POC and PAG by announcing its OMA POC compliant client - the Xperience™ OMA client. The client is available for integration with existing and prospective partners that are looking to add standards-based Push-to-Talk functionality into handsets that will enable Push-to-Talk on services launched by various operators worldwide.
Sonim is very excited to deliver the first OMA POC compliant client software to the wireless industry," said Bob Plaschke, President and CEO for Sonim Technologies. "The Sonim POC Client has already enabled three of the top five branded handset manufacturers to deliver a portfolio of PoC compliant handsets for the market. The Xperience OMA-PoC client release fulfils demands from these partners and operators for the next generation of standards-based clientware."
The OMA specifications have currently been released in draft form, and Sonim's design has been completed in conjunction with its partners. Development is well under way based on the draft specifications that are now supported by many of the Tier 1 wireless operators worldwide. The shipped version will include updates that cover all final changes to these specifications. The first OMA POC compliant solutions, integrated with Sonim partners' solutions, are expected immediately following the finalization of the specifications.
"We believe OMA PoC will be finalized very soon and will enable push-to-talk to become a worldwide market through the interoperability that standards provide," said Jason Chapman, analyst for Gartner. "This means that time-to-market will be critical and early movers will have the market advantage for Push-to-talk and potentially follow-on applications."
Sonim offers a full set of IOT testing capabilities. In addition, Sonim, together with its partners, will be featuring its Xperience OMA-PoC client at the OMA interoperability tests in May 2005. This is a continuation of Sonim's commitment to interoperability, as evidenced by the use of its POC Phase 1 clients at the Dallas TestFest last summer. An industry consortium on behalf of several prominent operators conducted this Inter-Operability Test event. Abraham Joseph, Chief Executive of Inteligentis, also agrees, "Standards-based solutions should ease the task of achieving interoperability among different service offerings - a necessary condition for a mass uptake of push-to-talk services."

Open Mobile Alliance (OMA)
The Push to talk over Cellular (PoC) Working Group is positioned to develop application-enabling specifications to permit the deployment of interoperable Push to talk over Cellular (PoC) services. Due to critical performance objectives for this service, support for the lower-level services required for this set of application enablers will require some direct engagement with the network defining groups (e.g. 3GPP and 3GPP2). The initial work of the Working Group, projected for finalization this quarter, will be focused on the tasks required to develop specifications for an open standard to enable adoption of PoC service over mobile networks.
